THIS Hari Raya will be different for 100 poor families in Lumut as their dilapidated houses are being renovated with a RM5,000 aid each from 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).
Whenever it rained, 77-year-old housewife Zaharah Harun used to tremble at the mere thought of having to move pails to contain the leaks at her home in Kampung Serdang, Sitiawan.
It was no easy task for someone her age.
“The leaking roof used to result in puddles of water on the floor and made it very slippery to walk on and it also damaged my furniture.
“This had been going on for the past 10 years until repairs were carried out by 1MDB contractors last month.
“The zinc panels of my roof, which have been replaced, used to get blown away by the strong winds and the rain will just pour into my house,” she told The Star.
Hardly able to put food on the table, Zaharah said she was extremely grateful to Lumut MP Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha for his help in applying for the aid in order to get her house repaired in time for Hari Raya.
“Most importantly, I am able to sleep peacefully now. The repairs have alleviated my suffering,” she said, holding back tears.
Her relief was shared by fellow villager, Bibi Khadijah Md Yusoff, 63, who previously had to change the linoleum flooring in her house three times due to water seepage from the front of her house until the kitchen at the back.
To make matters worse, Bibi Khadijah’s kitchen was infested by termites to the point that its beams had given way.
“Last month, a contractor from 1MDB came to replace my roof. They also broke down the kitchen wall and replaced it with zinc panels,” she said.
Widow Saringah Ismail’s house in the same village is currently being repaired.
“The roof has been leaking from the time I was young.
“I still remember my father trying to replace the zinc roof panels from time to time.
“We never knew why it leaked until the 1MDB contractor came to check the house and told us that the problem was caused by the height of our roof, which was too low,” said the 67-year-old.
Saringah said she had given up hope on getting her house repaired after her husband died.
“Hence, I was overjoyed when I received the aid to have the repairs carried out.
“It will be a good Raya. I’m looking forward to having my children back with me in our ‘new’ home,” she said.
Looking at fellow villagers’ houses being repaired was an encouragement to pensioner Yaacob Mohd Ali, 73, to apply for the 1MDB aid.
“My house has been under attack by termites for years but there was no way I could afford to pay exterminators to get rid of them.
“They have eaten through the beams and we fear our roof may collapse on us, especially during a thunderstorm,” he said.
Yaacob added that he did not replace parts of his roof that were blown away for fear that the beams would break when he nailed the zinc panels.
“Each time, I can only try to put one panel on top of each other but there are still leaks at the front portion of the house.
“My entire family is very grateful for the aid and also to Kong for his help as we could not have done it on our own,” said Yaacob, who retired early as a civil servant due to asthma and kidney disease.
“I eagerly await the repairs to be carried out and to be completed in time for Raya,” he added.
